Character Name: Valvatorez

Canon: Disgaea

AU/OC/Previous Game: n/a

Age: Unknown. At least 400; very likely over 2000.

Appearance: Val is a young-looking man. He’s tall, skinny, and pale. He has red eyes; dark, spiky hair; and long, pointed ears. He wears a cape that explodes into bats.

His true form is that of a big ol’ bat monster thing.

Cause of Death: Reincarnated his party down to level 1, but forgot to lower enemy levels when taking them to level-grind. It was a quick and pathetic Game Over.

Impact of Death: Val will be disappointed, but not devastated at his own death. He lived as a proud and noble demon and has very few regrets. He might take a few minutes to emo over the promises he can no longer fulfill, but he’ll get over that soon enough. The thing that’s really going to get him pissed off is the fact that no one in Thusia is repenting for their sins as prinnies, as is right and proper.

Character Info:

Once, Valvatorez was a great and powerful vampire tyrant who excelled at a demon’s job, which is to say, terrifying mankind. But there was one human, a young woman named Artina, that he couldn’t intimidate, so he made a bit of a wager with her: He swore that he would not drink the blood of any human unless he could strike fear into her heart. Unfortunately for him, she died three days later. Unable to fulfill his side of the bargain, he nonetheless kept his word and stopped drinking blood entirely, instead switching to a diet of sardines.

But a loss of blood meant a loss of power. No longer able to sustain his true form, Valvatorez fell from tyranny and was sent to Hades, the slummiest Netherworld of them all. There, he was given the lowly rank of Prinny Instructor and tasked with training prinnies (the exploding, penguinified souls of recently-departed human sinners) for the long road of karmic penance. This, too, he took with the utmost of seriousness. But one day, he finds out that the corrupternment (read: government with a directly-translated kanji pun) has enacted a plot to mass-exterminate the prinnies.

Little did the corrupternment know that Valvatorez had promised those prinnies that they would each get a sardine on their graduation day, and as far as he was concerned, they were going to get those sardines EVEN IF HE HAD TO OVERTHROW THE ENTIRE CORRUPTERNMENT. And then he spends the majority of the game systematically doing just that, overturning one conspiracy after the next as he tries to set the Netherworld aright.

Valvatorez is extremely honorable and straight-forward; as far lawful-good as a Disgaea demon is physically capable of getting. When he makes a promise (and he does so love his promises) he keeps it to the end, no matter how great or small. He takes his responsibilities with a wholeheartedness bordering on melodramatic. When Valvatorez brings revolution to the Netherworld, it’s not because he wishes to return to power, nor does he accept that power when it is offered to him. He does it because it needed to be done, and because Val can’t stand when things aren’t done properly. He's somewhat of a grumpy old man when it comes to his ideals, getting all riled up not only at political conspiracies and wrongful imprisonments, but minor rule-breaking and newspaper typos.

He's also a bit deluded, or at the very least has a highly-skewed world view. When he fell in love with Artina (after knowing her for only three days), he idolized her to the point that when he met her again and discovered her real personality, he wouldn’t even admit it was the same woman. You could call it gullibility, or maybe just a touch of excess optimism, but Valvatorez often treats the world around him as though he is the mentor figure in a shounen manga rather than the protagonist of a Disgaea game. He wants everyone he meets to be the best that they can be, and tends to trust those he considers comrades much further than is actually due. This is a guy whose hobbies include collecting characters with daddy issues and forcing self-esteem into them. In canon, these kinds of impulses are usually at least somewhat reigned in by his werewolf steward who does all of the heavy thinking (and evil plotting) for him. Both parties are completely content with this arrangement.

Also, Valvatorez’s passion for sardines is as deep and boundless as the sea, as is his knowledge of sardine trivia. Dude loves his little salty fish.

Old Game Info: n/a
Abilities (before Powercap):

Valvatorez is a sword user with good stats all around. Strong to ice, weak to fire. Disgaea vampires are basically portrayed as a subset of demonkind, and at least in Valvatorez’s case, don’t seem to follow traditional vampire rules (for example, he’s shown running around in the sunlight with no adverse effect). He doesn’t need to drink blood, but because he doesn’t, he can’t completely utilize his true form, the bat demon Tyrant Flughude (German for “bat” but spelled wrong). He can also manifest himself as smaller bats, and use them to attack.
tl;dr: is a Disgaea main character, canonly powerful enough to defeat God.

Abilities (after Powercap):
Valvatorez will come in at level 1 and be ultimately level-capped at 99. All stats will be adjusted accordingly. If he were till in his canon, I imagine this would be a, “sacrifice three-fourths your party, hope you can afford the hospital bill afterward” difference in power levels.

Items Brought In:
- A bag of fresh sardines
- A sword (the sword itself is power-capped; it adds on about the same amount of strength as an athletic human)
Samples:
Character monologue (internal or external) on a subject of your choice.
I don’t know what put it into your heads that gods ought to be running a Netherworld in the first place, but since you clearly are, I must tell you that this is not the way to go about it. The punishments are weak, the tone is lukewarm, and the discipline is utterly pathetic. Do these lost souls not deserve right to redeem themselves through heavy labor, suffering, and exploding when thrown?

I am reminded of a story, which I will share with you now:

There was once a human fisherman who found a group of children slapping each other with a sardine. He felt pity for this fish too small to eat and saved it, returning it to the ocean. The next morning, when he set out to go fishing, a huge sardine appeared to him and told him that he had rescued the princess of the Sardine Kingdom. The fisherman was given gills and taken to a splendid palace the bottom of the sea, where he met the princess Iwashihime, who was now a lovely maiden with the head of a fish. He married her, and ate her father, and became Overlord of the Sardine Kingdom.

This story not only
shows the overwhelming power that can be gained from consuming sardines, but makes a keen commentary on human nature. I hope it's taught you something.

IC Survey:
Introduce yourself in a few sentences.
I am Valvatorez, a Prinny Instructor from Hades. I come from long line of proud demon traditions and I plan on turning this world into a fresh new layer of hell. I look forward to working with all of you.

Describe yourself physically.
I have high strength but could use work on my fire resistance.

What was your childhood like?
At that time, I was yet ignorant of the power of sardines. To think, how rapidly could my power have grown had I only known...? But there is no meaning to despairing in lost opportunities of the past. I must live my life with my gaze ever set toward the future. There are other fish in the sea.

Who is most important to you, and why?
My esteemed comrades, with whom I fought to save the Netherworld, the Human World, and the moon. The bonds of promises and friendship between us are unbreakable.

What's your biggest pet peeve?
When the recently-damned try to escape their due punishment. There are those who would even claim that they are not dead!

Do you consider yourself an optimist or a pessimist? Why?
Am I an optimist? I suppose you could call it that. If believing in the unlimited potential of promises as carried out through perseverance and tenacity can be called optimism, then I have no argument.

Where, or how, did you learn your most important skills?
Not long after I became a Prinny Instructor, I was partaking with my students in a meal of their daily-appointed sardines, when I came to know a most excruciating pain. This small fish that seemingly had no strength to fight against being devoured had stabbed me, lodging one fo its very own rib deeply into my gums. Even in its death, it struck a vengeance most unexpected and terrible. Truly, I came to know a hidden power of sardines that day, and learned what I consider to be one of my most important skills of all: Eating fish carefully.

Do you think world peace is possible?
I presume you mean the Human World? But yes, I most certainly do. Once the demons of the Netherworld return to teach humans what it truly means to live in fear, then of course they will learn the humility necessary to live peacefully with one another.

Do you tend to argue with people, or avoid conflict?
Neither. When I see something that needs to be corrected, I correct it and move on.

What turns you on the most?
My steward is advising me, rather loudly, not to answer this question.

Anything else you'd like to say?
Sardines are an excellent source of vitamin D, B12, calcium, and omega-3 fatty acids. Remember it!!
